Perfect Tan, Not!

Posted by Debra on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

A glossy golden brown tan to set off toned limbs – that’s the stuff which the young fashion-conscious dreams are made of. The pursuit of that bronzed, sun-kissed look has led to an influx of sun worshippers in bikinis, board shorts, and bare chests congregating at the beaches. But just how much do they know about the dangers associated with excessive sun exposure?

A lot of youths are adventurous, fun loving and are passionate about sports. This may just cause them to overlook the necessity of proper sun protection. While many outdoor sports like soccer, wakeboarding, windsurfing etc are undoubtedly beneficial to health, the risks of excessive sun exposure to the participants are also very real.

Sun Damage

The sun emits 3 types of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. Only UVA and UVB rays reach the earth’s surface because UVC is filtered out by the ozone layer.

UVA penetrates deeply into the skin and triggers the production of melanin, which is a pigment in our body that causes skin to tan. UVB primarily affects the skin’s outer layer and causes sunburn. UV rays are thought to be responsible for chronic photo-aging (cluster of skin conditions like hyper pigmentation, wrinkles and sagging skin), and skin cancer.

Sunburn is one of the short-term damages of sun exposure. It ranges from redness and pain to redness and swelling, and in some serious cases, blisters can occur.

Frequent sunburns have been associated with increased risks of getting skin cancers. There are 3 common types of skin cancers: squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and malignant melanoma.

Most SCC and BCC cases are caused by chronic exposure to sunlight. These tumors appear most commonly on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, back, shoulders and lower lip. SCC tumors are irregular and fleshy growths that can enlarge and break down into ulcers.

BCC tumors are often shiny and pigmented, with raised borders. The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) in New York, USA, estimates that some 800,000 and 200,000 Americans suffer from BCC and SCC annually respectively.

Malignant melanoma is cancer of the skin’s pigment cells. It may form in pre-existing moles, where pigmentation is heavily concentrated. The tumors are presented as large, thick and colored (red, blue or black) patches that grow rapidly, with irregular outlines. The SCF estimates that about 51,000 new cases of malignant melanoma are reported annually in the USA.

On a less fatal note, exposure to bright light can also trigger migraines and headaches, for up to 24 hours. Melasma is another UV-related skin disorder characterized by symmetrical brown pigmentation patches in UV-exposed areas and affects women 90% of the time.

Block Out the Sun

Much as knowledge of sun exposure dangers is important, knowing how to minimize risks is even more essential. Techniques to minimize damage from sun rays can be divided into those to do with behavior and those to do with fabrics.

Behavior wise, sun-lovers can refrain from carrying out high-risk activities between 10am and 4pm, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. On a general note, try to keep in the shade while going about normal activities.

Fabrics that are sun-protective have tight weaves and are dark-colored. To test for a tight weave, hold the garment about 7 inches from your eyes towards a light source. If visible light can penetrate holes between the threads, so can UV rays. Dark colors absorb harmful UV rays better than light-colored clothes and hence protect the skin better.

To protect the face, sunscreen is essential, preferably one with at least Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 20. Reliable brands include Sunkiller, La Roche-Posay and Coppertone. If sun exposure time is expected to be long, then a sunscreen of higher SPF of 45 or 60 is recommended. One often-neglected directive is to reapply sunscreen frequently throughout the day, as sweat or friction may have washed it away. For the eyes, sunglasses with UV-protective coating are advised.

Alternative Tones

Fashion-conscious youths who covet a tan but are afraid of increasing their skin cancer risks have started to frequent tanning salons. This misguided attempt only reduces the incidence of sunburn and not skin cancer, warns Dr Wong, an associate consultant dermatologist with the National Skin Centre of Singapore.

“In fact, by going to tanning salons, you are exposed to unnecessary excessive UVA, which may increase your risk of getting skin cancer as it is primarily UVA-mediated.”

One relatively harmless alternative to sun tanning is to use self-tanning lotions. These contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with proteins in dead skin cells on the skin surface to result in brown pigmentation, which becomes the tan. While self-tanning lotions, like other topical products, have been known to cause skin irritation, no adverse long-term effects have been recorded.

As we welcome the warm, sunny weather, do keep in mind the relevant risks and precautions. Being cautious when young may just save you lots of heartache and pain in later years.

My Crest Spinbrush

Posted by Danny Wirken - on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

The Crest Spinbrush was my first electric toothbrush. It is not as advanced as other electric toothbrushes out there but it does the job. It has the most basic of features no frills such as timers and blinking lights. It does not even have a rechargeable battery pack. Ask yourself though what do you really need from an electric toothbrush?

The Crest Spinbrush is a very practical, solid electric toothbrush. It is not too heavy and is comfortable in the hand. The power button is right in the middle of the thick handle and slides up and down, locking well into place. The toothbrush head is shaped like a tear drop and is divided into two parts. It is the circular upper part that rotates. This is great because it reaches into the far corners of your mouth to clean the hard-to-reach teeth and gums. Since the head rotates, there is no need for you to agonize over trying to manually brush so far back.

The brush doesnt come with a case for traveling but it does have a clear hard plastic cover for the head. If the brush is to be used mainly at home then the cover will be adequate. If you plan to lug it around during trips, you should place it in some other protective case as the head cover is easily removed.

When the brush bristles start to fray, you do not have to throw the whole gadget away. Head replacements are easy to come by. It is just as easy to take them off as well. All you need to do is twist the head firmly.

The Crest Spinbrush does not have a rechargeable battery pack. All you need are two size AA batteries and you are ready to go. The battery compartment is at the bottom of the handle. Thats what actually makes the toothbrush stand up on its end given that you have batteries inside of course. This is another great thing about the Spinbrush. The battery compartment is very watertight and does not let water in, thus preserving the battery life.

When it comes to cleaning the teeth, the Spinbrush really does the job. Stains on the teeth that may be caused by build up from drinking too much coffee and smoking are not a problem. Of course it would be wise to use good quality toothpaste with your Spinbrush.

The Misadventures of An Orange:Why You Need Nutritional Supplements

Posted by Lac Tran on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Sure, we all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us, but sometimes, by the time such items reach our table, their vitamin and mineral benefits may be weakened or non-existent. That is why, to ensure proper health, it is advised to include nutritional supplements in your daily diet as a safe way to maintain adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals that the body needs for optimal health performance.

Did you know that the shelf life of fruits and vegetables starts deteriorating the moment that item is picked off the branch or vine? Freshness and nutritional value cant be improved after harvest, only maintained, and then for a limited period of time. A freshly picked orange, just by sitting there doing nothing, is losing its goodness at an alarming rate. And thats before it even starts its journey to your table

From the Farm to Your Dinner-Table

The freshness of any food, and its usefulness as a nutritional supplement, depends on how long its journey has taken from the place it was grown, to your home. The best scenario is that the orange that is now sitting on your table came from your own back yard just minutes ago. However, that is not reasonable for the majority of people living around the world, and food must be harvested and then packaged and trucked to other locations. Sometimes, that trip may take only a few hours, but usually, its a matter of days. What happens to those fruits and vegetables, like our orange, in the meantime?

Many different factors determine the nutritional supplement value for any shipped food product. Weather conditions are important. Is our orange sitting in humid temperatures or dry air? If it is in humid conditions then so much the better, as it is water that best retains the vitamin and nutritional value of any fruit. Water makes up a great amount of fruits, and nothing can survive without it. Grocery stores regularly spray vegetables with fine mists of water to keep those items fresh and plump. However, by the time our orange is in the grocery store, its already lost most of its vitamin content – and *****!!!!!!! DO NOT TRY AND HIDE SNEAKY LINKS IN THE BODY !!!!!***** href=”http://www.mitamins.com”>health benefits – making any water spraying a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

When Do You Need Nutritional Supplements?

There is some good news, because certain foods keep better than others after harvesting. Knowing what these are may help to provide optimal health benefits as well as to help people decide what kinds of nutritional supplement they may want to look for, and what vitamins they should contain. Fruits and vegetables can be arranged into a rough scale of those that dont lose their vitamin content easily, to those at the top that often have very little nutrients in them by the time they get to the store. It is these that necessitate the use of nutritional supplements to replace lost vitamins and provide optimum health.

Working from the bottom up, foods that keep longer without spoiling or losing their nutritional value are dried fruits (though often they dont have much to start with!), then apples, sweet potatoes, garlic, grapes, and potatoes. Softer fruits and vegetables will spoil faster. These may include the cabbage family, soft fruits like pears and nectarines and most types of lettuce. It also includes our poor orange. The highest decline in shelf life is seen in peas, asparagus, broccoli and mushrooms. To get the vitamins and other health benefits from these foods, nutritional supplements are needed – unless you grow them yourself!

As already mentioned, if the essential vitamins and minerals in your diet come from the foods with the shortest shelf life as far as nutrient value is concerned, you may want to hedge your bets with vitamin and mineral nutritional supplements or other herbal supplements that may provide the boost that those vegetables and fruits didnt. This is not to say that you should stop eating fruit and vegetables altogether, far from it. The best thing you can to do to maintain optimal health and immunity from many common health concerns it to eat a diet rich in fiber and fruits and vegetables rich in anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals that your body cant produce by itself. However, the power of these natural foods can be enhanced through taking nutritional supplements so that we can get the full compliment of vitamins and nutrients we need for optimum health. And remember that when you buy your oranges, eat them as quickly as possible so that they dont suffer more than they have already.

The Perfect Meal To Boost Your Health

Posted by Ryan Cote - on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Good nutrition is vital to a strong and healthy mind and body. It’s true what they say – you are what you eat.

This statement points out very effectively that if you feed your body with low nutritional and sugary garbage, your body has nothing to work with and you’ll end up eventually feeling like garbage.

On the other hand, if you nourish your body with food that is packed with nutrients such as vitamins, fiber, healthy fats, whole grains and omega-3’s, you’ll notice a huge difference in how you look and feel…especially if you make this type of food a dietary habit.

Right now we’re at a crossroad – we know we should be eating better, but there are so many restaurants available offering “bad” food and it’s making the obesity rate skyrocket. Even restaurants that offer fish platters and other health-conscious meals end up not so good because of the amount of calories you ingest between the bread, large portions and dessert.

You have two options:

1. Stay away from fast rood restaurants – and when you eat out at restaurants, be strict about what you eat. Stay away from the bread and don’t finish everything on your plate…bring the rest home for a meal you can eat the next day.

2. Make a meal at home yourself using ingredients you buy at the grocery store, not frozen entrees.

The focus of this article is on number two because by making your own meal, you can control exactly what goes into it. The end result is a meal that you know is nutritious and NOT packed with health-deteriorating ingredients.

Here’s an example of the perfect meal you can make at home. It has everything you need for better health.

What you’ll need is:

1 9-10 ounce bag of baby spinach
1 can of wild Alaskan pink salmon
1-2 teaspoons of olive oil
1-2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar
1/2-3/4 cup of brown rice

Here’s a breakdown of each food’s health benefits:

Spinach – this green leaf is packed with phytonutrients, vitamins and fiber – and it’s low in calories.

Wild Alaskan Pink Salmon – yes, canned! It tastes better than you think. The reason this is recommended is because the food is a powerhouse of good fats, protein and omega-3’s and is low in calories and carbohydrates. The salmon you would normally buy is potentially high in mercury, which is bad. This Wild Alaskan form is free of mercury…and it’s inexpensive.

In case you’re wondering, Omega-3’s are vital for healthy weight loss, brain health and a healthy cardiovascular system.

Olive Oil – full of good fat which your body does need. When you buy olive oil, make sure it’s 100% authentic. Some brands are now mixing olive oil with refined oils…the end result is olive oil, but not really.

Balsamic Vinegar – vinegar reportedly controls your blood sugar level when eating which is important for overall health. Furthermore, it gives the meal more taste.

Brown Rice – whole grains are full of vitamins and fiber. Check out Uncle Ben’s instant brown rice…it’s pretty good and quick to make.

Making the meal is easy. You simply lay the spinach out on a platter- you can more or less use however much you want- and drizzle 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil and balsamic vinegar over the spinach.

Let this sit for 10 minutes or so- this gives the spinach a chance to soak up the oil and vinegar. While this is sitting, cook the brown rice and open up the can of salmon.

When ready, simply spread the salmon over the spinach and put the brown rice either on the side or in a separate bowl.

And now the best part of all – ENJOY!

This meal will take you 15 minutes max to make and each bite will nourish your body from the inside out. And once you get used to eating healthy, you’ll find yourself experimenting with all types of different meals.

This article shared with you one example of a perfect meal, but there are many many more!

Tips On Preventing Hypertension In Women

Posted by on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

In women 45 years of age or older, sixty percent of Caucasian women and seventy-nine percent of African-American women have hypertension. It is estimated that thirty percent of elderly women over 65 years are diagnosed with isolated systolic hypertension. Therefore, as you age your risk of developing high blood pressure increases drastically. Although the risk factors are similar between men and women, gender differences have not been documented conclusively by research studies.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke remain the leading causes of death in women in America. The risk of CVD increases after the onset of menopause and continues to rise with age. Since 1984, the total deaths due to CVD have been greater in women as compared to men.

Women taking oral contraceptives or hormone treatment can experience a small but detectable increase in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, usually in the normal range. If this rise in blood pressure occurs, women should talk to their doctors about a possible cause for the rise in blood pressure and what they can do about it. Women age 35 and older who smoke cigarettes and take oral contraceptives are at an even greater risk for heart disease and stroke. If they are unable to quit smoking, a woman should talk to their doctor about using other forms of birth control. Women who take hormone replacement therapy are urged to have their blood pressure monitored more frequently after such therapy is started.

Lifestyle modifications are a safe, effective treatment option for hypertension, yet they are underutilized by many healthcare providers, particularly in pre-and perimenopausal women. When you consider the alternative to making a change to your everyday life to aid in the treatment of hypertension and all the health dangers that can occur from this condition, the modifications aren’t such a bad idea.

Diets high in fiber and low in fat and animal protein tend to have a lower incidence of hypertension. Therefore, it is imperative that you eat a balanced diet to aid in the prevention of hypertension. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet investigators found that a combined diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products with reduced saturated fat can reduce blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. In addition, African-American subjects experienced a greater reduction in blood pressure than Caucasians but there were no significant differences in the extent of lowered blood pressure based on gender. Not only will this be of benefit to your blood pressure readings, it will let you shed a few pounds which is also encouraged by physicians in the treatment of hypertension.

Some women develop high blood pressure for the first time in the middle of their pregnancy. The mother develops toxemia of pregnancy, a condition that can threaten the lives of both the mother and unborn child. High blood pressure can harm the mother’s kidneys and other organs as well as cause low birth weight and premature delivery. Getting early and regular prenatal care is the most important thing you can do for you and your baby.

The caffeine in coffee, even in large amounts, has not been determined to have an adverse affect on the rise of high blood pressure but does not increase the risk of developing hypertension as much as cola drinks. When you drink beverages that contain caffeine, your blood pressure goes up in the immediate period afterwards although there are no conclusive results from studies to evaluate the effect of caffeine on blood pressure. If you aren’t totally dependent on that cup of coffee first thing in the morning, a wise move to make would be to drink a flavored or sparkling water beverage.

Understanding And Treating Your Nail Fungus

Posted by Dave Robinson on July 17, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Nail fungus is an awful condition that can really be bothersome. It is a condition in which a fungus invades the skin in and around the nail bed. It can happen in either the toes or the fingers and can be quite uncomfortable as well as noticeable. But, there are several things that you can do to fight off these nail fungus problems and it starts with an education about them.

Symptoms Of Nail Fungus

There are several ways to know if you have nail fungus. Nails will change in some way as an indication that there is a problem. Brittleness and discoloration are evident. You will find that nail fungus can also cause a thickening of the nail or even a distortion of the nails actual shape. The nail could lose its shine and luster and will often begin to loosen. If you have these conditions, you will want to seek the advice of your family doctor. The doctor will probably simply tell you and begin treatment for nail fungus but a culture will tell for sure if you have a nail fungus.

The Causes Of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is caused by a number of different microorganisms. Most of the time, bacteria or fungi are the main culprits. While a small amount of these organisms is actually good for the body, some will grow quickly and then form infections that lead to conditions such as nail fungus. They feed off of the dead tissues that are found from the hair, nails, and on the skin.

Fungal infections can be caused by mold like fungi. These could be such conditions as athletes foot, jock itch, and ringworm. Other fungus is yeast like fungi and would include such conditions as diaper rash, oral thrush and genital rashes. Most of the time, nail fungus happens on the toes and recurs often. It can be picked up from public areas such as swimming pools or shower rooms. Those individuals who sweat a lot have an increased chance of getting and keeping nail fungus infections because they thrive on wet, moist areas.

Treating Nail Fungus

Unfortunately, treating nail fungus is difficult and often is impossible. Many people start with creams thinking that they will work, but unfortunately, they have little chance of fighting off the infection. Oral medications are available to help. Sporanox and Lamisil are two that are commonly given but the side effects of these medications often cause them to be not worth the risk. And, they often will take several months to show any improvement. Still, reoccurrences will happen. The only way for it to be cured is for new, non infected nails to grow in place of the badly infected ones.

It is wise to contact your health care provider to talk about solutions to your nail fungus problems. They can offer input in how to treat and how to overcome these conditions. Complications of nail fungus include permanent damage to the nail itself, skin infections which are secondary as well as the common recurrent nail fungus infections.

The best prevention of nail fungus is proper hygiene. Keeping the skin in the area of the nail fungus clean and dry will help to alleviate some of the inflammations. Take care of the nails and always wash and dry your hands after you have touched the affected area of the body.

Dhauti An Excellent Stomach Cleanser.

Posted by Sharon Hopkins - on July 16, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Dhauti is a shuddhikriya which means the act of cleaning. It specifically cleans the stomach. Since it is one of the main organ in the human body and the health of the human being dependent on the condition of the stomach, hence it becomes very important for you to clean your stomach. Dhauti is the useful activity for this cleansing.

Dhauti is of three types:

Vamana-dhauti: This is the easiest of all the three types. In this process you have to drink about six glasses of water and then vomit it out by putting the index and the middle fingers in the mouth till uvula. You throw up the water, which brings along with it, the impurities in the stomach.

Danda-dhauti: Repeat the above process but instead of inserting the fingers, you insert a rubber tube of about three feet in length and the width slightly more than the lead pencil. It is gulped down slowly so that one end of the tube reaches the stomach while the other end is held outside the mouth. Bend the trunk forward and this siphoning action will bring out the water from the stomach. When all the water is thrown out, bring out the rubber tube. Before using the tube, clean and disinfect it by inserting it in boiling water for a few minutes. It is difficult for a lot of people to insert the tube without vomiting because the throat is sensitive to the touch stimuli. For them, it is advisable to go for the vamana-dhauti since it is the simpler of the two. The advantage of danda-dhauti is that there is no spasm of the stomach wall and the water is thrown out very smoothly.

Vastra-dhauti: This is the most difficult but useful dhauti. Here a strip of fine muslin cloth of about three inches in width and twenty feet in length is taken. It is washed and disinfected by dipping it in boiling water for some time and rolled up. Hold one end of it between the two fingers and insert it into the mouth. Gulp it down slowly. Stop gulping when only six inches of the cloth remain outside the mouth. Take care to ensure that you do not let the other end go into the mouth. Churn the abdomen by Nauli with the cloth inside the stomach. Now remove the strip slowly by pulling out the other end of the cloth. This dhauti cleanses the stomach by rubbing itself against the inner lining of the stomach wall and removing all the impurities from the stomach.

Dhauti has a great therapeutic value. You can use it as a part of yogic treatment of disorders like acidity and asthma.

Health Dangers Of Asbestos

Posted by Jennefer Poultson - on July 16, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Mesothelioma and asbestosis are the long term result of prior exposure to asbestos. You have undoubtedly heard of asbestos, and are probably aware of its dangers. But many people are not aware as to exactly what it is and where it can still be found in the environment in which we live.

Asbestos is a type of mineral fiber that used to be utilized in many products for the purpose of making them more resistant to the extremes of heat and cold. For many years asbestos was used widely by the building industry, before it was known that this material releases particles which produce mesothelioma – an aggressive form of lung cancer – when they are inhaled. Asbestos is no longer used, for this reason.

There is also active controversy that some sectors of the building industry continued to exposure their workers to asbestos, with the attendant risks of asbestosis and mesothelioma long after the building industry was in possession of compelling evidence of the dangers of asbestos use.

One issue many people may not realise is that asbestos use was not limited to commercial buildings – it was commonly used in the building of homes, and yours could be one of them. The fibers of asbestos are in some roofs and tiles built up with asbestos cement. They also can be found in paintings and substances to cover holes in walls or ceilings. Some old hot water pipes might be covered with asbestos too. Ask a professional to take a look to your house in order to ascertain if you and your family are in risk.

Certainly, if you are considering demolishing any walls, or renovating or remodelling your home, it is imperative that you have an asbestos expert determine whether or not there is asbestos present in your home. Indeed, it is illegal to demolish or otherwise interfere with any structure containing with asbestos. It is necessary to have the asbestos professionally removed by people who know exactly what precautions to take to remove asbestos containing structures, and how to safely dispose of the asbestos so as not to cause any inadvertent exposure to asbestos, which could well cause the development of mesothelioma some years later.

Who Needs Calcium Supplements and Why?

Posted by Robert E on July 16, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

The straight forward answer to this question is people of all ages
require calcium supplements to keep their bones strong and avoid any
kind of bone disease.
The amount of calcium required by the body depends on the age of the
person.

Listed below is a dietary reference guide published by National Academy
of Sciences Institute of Medicine.
0 – 6 months
210 milligrams/day
6 – 12 months
270 milligrams/day
1 – 3 years
500 milligrams/day
4 – 8 years
800 milligrams/day
9 – 18 years
1,300 milligrams/day
Adults 19 – 50 years
1,000 milligrams/day
Adults 51+ years
1,200 milligrams/day

Calcium is present in all diary products (milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage
cheese etc) ,leafy vegetables, eggs and meat. The calcium which the
body gets through daily intake of food is not sufficient to meet the
daily requirements of the body. When we do not take enough calcium our
bodies use up the calcium present in the bones hence making the body
bones week and open to all kinds of bone diseases.
So it is required we take a calcium supplement designed to meet our
calcium requirements according to the dosage mentioned.

What calcium does to our Body?

Calcium helps to build up our skeletal structure. it also has a role to
play in nerve function, blood clotting and muscle health. increased
calcium intake and reduced levels of pre-menstrual symptoms and also
helps in maintaining blood pressure.

What are the different kinds of calcium supplements available?

Seaweed Calcium from the Sea seaweed calcium supplement product combines all necessary
co-nutrients that are vital to calciums metabolism into the bone. The
foundational minerals are from coral reefs located in pristine waters
off the coast of Okinawa, Japan and consciously harvested in an
eco-friendly manner. Harvesting is done by a company who is an active
member of the World Wildlife Federation and in waters only that have
been pre-approved by the Okinawa Prefectural Government. Calcium from
the Sea has health generating potential far beyond traditional calcium
supplements. It is ideal for men of all ages and pre-menopausal women

NanoCalcium – NanoCalcium Supplement is a very unique product. It is one of those products that come along once every few years that has amazing healing potential. It has been tested in Japan for over 10 years and has only recently been made available in the United States. It works on the same principle as
Seaweeds calcium supplements, namely alkalinizing the blood system, but
is considerably stronger.

What are the problems caused due to calcium deficiency?

1, Calcium deficiency weakens bones and makes them more prone to
fractures.
2, cause extreme nerve sensitivity, muscle spasms, and leg cramps
3, Improper functioning of the heart.
4, slows down blood clotting system hence wounds take longer time to
heal.
5, weakens teeth so gum disease occur frequently.
6, High blood pressure may occur

Conclusion:

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body. A constant supply of
calcium is necessary throughout our lifetime. It is necessary
that every one irrespective of their age should take calcium
supplements in right dosage. Over dosge of calcium is harmful to the
body. To lead a healty long life take calcium supplements in the right
dosge.

Oh, K! A Powerful Choice for Your Nutritional Supplements

Posted by Lac Tran on July 16, 2010 in Natural Health & Wellness with No Comments

Take this quick pop quiz:

What do watercress, broccoli, and olive oil have in common? The answer is that they are all natural sources of vitamin K. This powerful vitamin is a weapon in the war against aging as well as an amazing addition to any nutritional supplements. Heres why:
Vitamin K: Keeps Bones Healthy!

Vitamin K is a naturally occurring substance that helps keeps bones healthy, thus preventing against osteoporosis and similar bone-related conditions. In children, vitamin K helps provide a foundation upon which growth can occur; without vitamin K, kids would be at risk from many problems. This is why its also recommended that pregnant women take nutritional supplements containing vitamin K; otherwise, their fetuses might be missing out on this important nutrient.
Vitamin K: Keeps Blood Sticky

Coagulation, the process of blood cells sticking together, is necessary in human beings. After all, when a cut or wound occurs, the body must be able to stave off excessive bleeding if at all possible; otherwise, serious problems could occur. Vitamin K is partially responsible for making certain that blood can coagulate; hence, its presence can assist in ensuring that, should an injury occur, a person will not bleed to death.
Vitamin K: Youd Be Lost without It

Though most individuals make their own vitamin K thanks to Mother Nature, vitamin K doesnt always get processed efficiently. For example, certain chronic digestion and absorption malfunctions could eventually lead to problems such as hemophilia or brittle bones. Thats why its always a good idea to add nutritional supplements containing vitamin K as a prophylactic approach to staying healthy.
Vitamin K: Too Much or Not Enough?

According to the Institute of Medicine, vitamin K can be taken in doses between 90 and 120 micrograms (depending upon age and gender, among other factors). However, too much is unlikely to occur, as vitamin K (as part of nutritional supplements) is usually limited to conservative amounts. However, in the rare case that a toxic amount of vitamin K was ingested in food or via nutritional supplements, excessive perspiration, anemia, and jaundice have been known to occur.
Vitamin K: Where Can I Find It?

Its likely that many foods you currently eat contain decent quantities of vitamin K, such as egg yolks, spinach, and even mayonnaise unless youre a strict vegan. In that case, nutritional supplements may be your best choice. And make sure to take any pills or tablets with food; nutritional supplements are best absorbed when the patient has a full stomach. Otherwise, many of the nutritional supplements vitamins and minerals could be eliminated before they have the opportunity to make an impact or be fully absorbed.
Vitamin K: A Knock Out!

So are you ready to knock out problems related to your blood and your bones and teeth? If so, start adding vitamin K to your diet today. Whether you opt for leafy green veggies from your home garden or you feel that nutritional supplements will better fit your lifestyle, you cannot go wrong by making certain that vitamin K is part of your daily routine.
