Tips For Efficient Travel Writing

Posted by Barney Garcia - on July 18, 2010 in Internet Business with No Comments

Travel stories should be simple, crisp and to the point with clarity of thought. Witty and vividly written accounts with an authors personal experiences, anecdotes and quotations can be especially interesting. One can experience travel through words only. Practical and accurate information in grammatically correct language makes reading a pleasure. Some tips on writing accounts of travel are given below.

Think like a Reader
Before starting an article, put your self in the readers boots. Ask what he/she wants. Who are the targeted readers of the particular publication, what are their travel aspirations, what information will be useful to them and how they enjoy the written articles. Once you are clear about that, then commence the work.

Travel Writing: The Big Picture
Now you have to get across the main point to the reader. Identify the central theme of your article, whether it is the location, people or activity oriented place. Work your impressions and facts around this big picture. Now structure your article around, sieve non-essentials, include important aspects and build the story sensibly.

Travel Writing: Be Personal
To make the story interesting, convey your personal experiences and point of view. That place must have been visited or written about countless times before. Write of your own personal approach, personal adventure that thrilled you, some new aspect of the place that inspired you, some new useful discovery of the place. This makes for an interesting insight into the writing.

Travel Writing: Be Funny
Travel to unfamiliar locale is often rich in comedy and comical events. Incorporate these funny incidents, mishaps or any such feeling into the article. Dont be afraid to make your readers laugh. Have a light, lively tone in your article.

Travel Writing: Be surprising
Be an open-minded traveler yourself. Try unusual activities, meeting new people, tasting exotic cuisines and getting involved with native activities in a new place. This will give you a different perspective of the place. Surprise your reader with this out of the ordinary, personally experienced information.

Travel Writing: Quote
Let the people express their thoughts, ideas and feelings about the place, work or activity. Quote extensively in their words. Quote real life stories and experiences for that personal touch to your article.

Travel Writing: Be balanced
Have a balanced approach. Blend your personal observations, descriptions and commentary with practical and useful information to the readers to make it a good travel piece. Two-third colorful description to one-third facts is a reasonable guideline to start with.

Travel writing is not only lucrative but lot of fun too. Keep your eyes open for interesting story line. Research well; write a well-constructed, focused, well-crafted and unique article on travel.

Stewardship Creating Wealth for God.

Posted by Debra Lohrere on July 17, 2010 in Internet Business with No Comments

All that we have and all that we are has come from God. He has blessed us with money and possessions, and he has given each of us specific talents and abilities. We have been called to be good stewards – to use our money, our time and our abilities as best we can to benefit Gods kingdom.
Giving tithes and offerings demonstrates our obedience to God, and the recognition that all we have has come from him. Giving our time in the Lords work, whether in ministry, helping those in need or greeting people at the Church door, shows our determination to follow the Lords teachings.
Why is it then, if we are happy to faithfully give our time and money, that so many Christians seem to have an issue when it comes to discussing wealth creation.
There seem to be two distinct lines of thought the one promoted by many of the big name TV evangelists who promote the prosperity and name it and claim it teachings and the other viewpoint of many of the conservative Church officials who push the opinion that seeking wealth is ungodly.
Unfortunately both of these viewpoints seem to run contrary to the word, and to Jesus teachings about stewardship.
The prosperity teachers promote the idea that whatever you give to God, he will return to you many times over. Although this is close to the teaching of stewardship, which says that you should seek to multiply whatever God gives you, so that you can give him more back in return. It has been distorted, in as much as the actual motivation behind giving promoted by the prosperity teachers is self based (if I give more, God will give me more) instead of focusing on Christ. There is a huge difference between giving to get more, and working to increase your means so that you can give more to further the works of the kingdom.
Some now try to imply that if you are not prosperous, then your walk with the Lord must be lacking in some area, and others at the other end of the spectrum are always making condemning statements about the evils of being rich.
We need to really look at what the word says, and the examples that Jesus gave.
I firmly believe that the enemy wants to deter us from aiming to invest and make our wealth grow, as he does not want us to be successful. He doesnt want us making lots of money that we can use for the Lords work. He doesnt want us to be able to fund mission outreaches or to feed the poor or to fund Christian satellite TV channels. Some Christians seem to have the misconception that being wealthy is evil and being poor is holy. There is nothing holy about being poor. God doesnt want his children to be in poverty. A rich person has far more power at their disposal to be able to help where financial assistance is needed than a poor person. At the same time though we need to make sure that our motivation for creating wealth is to get so we can give as opposed to the prosperity teachers notion that we should give so we can get. As long as we do not idolise money, and retain the truth that all we have has come from God anyway, then there is no need to feel any guilt about how much money we make.
There are many examples in the Bible that show Gods desire to bless his faithful followers with wealth:
(Gen 39:2) And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
(Deu 29:9) Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.
(2 Chr 26:5) And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper.
and 1 Kings 3:13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
God loves to bless his children, especially if we in return are happy to bless others. Therefore there is absolutely nothing wrong with setting goals to be good stewards and create wealth to give back to our creator. In fact, as stewards of the resources God has given us, it is actually our responsibility to aim at increasing what we have.
We should be seeking to be successful for God. To genuinely set goals for investing both our money and time into the kingdom of God. The best way to increase your monetary wealth is not to go asking the boss for a pay rise, but rather to start a regular investment program. More important still, is to learn how to invest wisely and not be wasteful with our resources.
Before you can start investing you need to make some money available. One of the most effective methods it to use the 10/10/80 Plan. 10% of your income to God, 10% for investing and live off the remaining 80% of your income. This may take a little time to adjust to, but when you consider the long terms results that you will achieve once you start investing, you will find that it is extremely worthwhile.
You will have all heard the expression that The second million is always easier than the first. This is absolutely true the reason being is that it is compounding interest that has the greatest power to create wealth, and the more you have invested that compounding can work on the quicker your wealth will grow.
In mathematical terms 72 divided by Compound Interest Rate of Return = Years for Money to Double in Value.
Therefore if you have an investment growing at 10% compound interest, it will double in value in 7.2 years (quadruple in 14.4 years and be worth eight times as much in 21.6 years). If it is growing at 12% it will double in 6 years.
John D Rockefeller who was once one of Americas richest men said that Compound Interest is the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Einstein once said, The most powerful concept or principle in the world that I am aware of is that of compound interest.
When deciding on the best areas to invest in, it is worth taking into consideration the fact that over 90% of the worlds millionaires have made their money through property.
In Australia over the past 50 years property has averaged 10% p.a. compound growth. (Carefully selected properties have averaged even greater returns). Not forgetting that investment properties will also be generating an income from rent.
Median priced property has averaged growing at a rate of 2 4% p.a. higher than inflation, making it a very solid investment.
I believe the most effective way to build riches is to accumulate a portfolio of investment properties (over the space of 7 to10 years) and then let the power of Compound Interest work to your benefit.
It is possible to borrow 100% of the purchase price of a property plus expenses by securing the deposit against your own home, so that you dont have to come up with a cash deposit.
There are many different strategies for property investing, which suit different people depending on their current income or financial position.
God will give you the wisdom to decide on the best strategies for your situation if you put in the time and effort to learn as much as you can and seek his direction. It is wise to also seek professional advice, as rules and regulations and tax effectiveness will vary between nations.
The main reason that property can be utilised more effectively than shares as an investment, is due to the added benefit of being able to highly gear an investment property.
Gearing or leveraging is where you use a small portion of your own money along with a large portion of someone elses money (in this case a loan from the bank) to secure an investment of a far greater value than you could have using only you own money.
If you had $10,000 to invest and invested it directly into shares that were growing at 10%, then in 7.2 years they would be worth around $20,000. On the other hand if you had used that $10,000.00 as 5% deposit on a $200,000.00 property and had borrowed the remaining 95% plus establishment costs. If this also grew at 10% then in 7.2 years your investment would be worth $400,000.00. Meaning that by leveraging your investment you have gained an additional $190,000.00.
Keep in mind here that there are two types of Debt. Good Debt is where you have borrowed funds to secure a capitally appreciating, income producing asset. Bad Debt is where you borrow to buy a capitally depreciating, non-income producing item such as a car, boat or holiday.
A combination of using Good Debt to buy property and then allowing Compounding to do its work seems to be a most effective way of creating wealth. But this is definitely not a Get rich quick scheme, on the contrary it is a Get rich slowly scheme which works most effectively over a 10 to 20 year period. It takes patience and perseverance, but after having spoken to dozens of other property investors, many of whom have become multi millionaires within the space of 10 to 15 years, I am certain that it is worthwhile.
I believe God wants to start shifting the wealth of this world into the hands of Christians, who can plant it back into his kingdom.

Selecting A Horse – Choose The Breed Carefully

Posted by Lynn Walls on July 16, 2010 in Family with No Comments

Owning a horse is a huge responsibility. Just like owning any pet, you should put a great deal of thought and consideration before you decide to purchase an equine. Since most individuals will have to house horses off their property, you should first consider finding a suitable stable before you purchase a horse. Also, consider your wants and needs.

If you or your stable has limited space, you might not want to consider a sizable draft horse like a Clydesdale. However, if you are in need of a large horse to do a great deal of work pulling wagons, you should consider breeds other than Shetlands. There are a great number of breeds, each with a different pro and con. After carefully reviewing each breed, you are sure to find the exact type of horse to fit your needs and your lifestyle.

Ask yourself what you are looking for in a horse. Do you want a horse that you can show? Do you want a horse for work purposes? Do you want a horse to jump or ride competitively? Do you want a horse to race? Do you want a horse to ride on trails or one that is compatible with children? After you determine why you want a horse (and the answer should be better than “just because”), you can set out determining what breed is best for you. Keep in mind, even though the breed might fit everything you want, each horse will have a different personality. Before you run out and buy the first horse in your desired breed, take a careful look at the specific horse in question.

If you are interesting in showing a horse for its beauty and grace, an Arabian horse is probably your best bet. These beautiful creatures are well-liked on the show circuit and enjoy being fussed and fawned over. For those daring riders who want a horse for jump training, the strong-legged Thoroughbred may be the perfect fit. These gentle giants are rugged enough to withstand the abuse of jumping, but are agile enough to soar over the highest gates. If you would rather have a rough-and-tumble horse perfect for uneven trail rides, the American Quarter Horse should be your top pick. These famous horses are often used in competitive Western riding events, including the heart-pumping barrel racing.

American Quarter Horses are perfect for the intense training required for competitive racing, but also have the sure-footed step necessary for making the quick turns and negotiating rocky terrain. A Tennessee Walking Horse or Mountain Horse is the perfect fit for the horse owners who want to go on quiet rides. The gentle gait of these beautiful creatures gives these horses the best ride over even terrain. Finally, if you are looking a horse for a child, consider a smaller breed like the Icelandic. The shorter stature better fits the proportion of a child, and their smooth gait and easy-going attitude will prevent much bumping and jostling.

Whatever your choice of breed, carefully consider its pros and cons. Even though you may have your heart set on one specific breed, if it will not meet your needs, you should carefully rethink your choice. A horse is a huge responsibility and you cannot simply return the magnificent creature because you did not seriously research all your options and hastily chose a horse that will not fit into your lifestyle.

Choosing A Business Opportunity – Starting Your Own Business

Posted by Rick Hendershot on July 15, 2010 in Sustainable Business with No Comments

Millions of people are desparate to escape the 9 to 5 grind. One popular alternative is to look for a business opportunity that turns you from an employee into a self-employed entrepreneur running your own business.

There are many good reasons why this can be a wise move. Being your own boss means you can set your own hours. This can be very important if you have small children, or simply want to spend more time at home. Working from home can also save valuable time, if the alternative is spending two or three hours every day commuting back and forth to your work place. And of course, working for yourself also gives you the opportunity to make a whole lot more money.

In other words, being your own boss gives you that valuable commodity called freedom. It sets you free from the limitations of being someone else’s paid employee, and in return makes you responsible for your own future. As a self-employed entrepreneur you are free to set your own hours, establish your own work habits, choose what work you will do or will not do, create your own products, drum up your own customers, and do what you have to do to make those customers happy.

And perhaps most importantly, when you are self-employed you are free to set your own prices and make as much or as little income as you are able. You will not have to answer to anyone other than yourself, your suppliers, and of course, the ever-present taxman, after you become successful.

**How to get started — Two Alternatives**

There are two obvious ways you can go about starting your own business. The first way is to quit your day job and launch full bore into your new business. We’ll call this the “All or Nothing Approach”. The second way is to continue on with your current employment and develop a business on the side, in your spare time. We’ll call this the “Spare Time Approach”.

Depending on your point of view, taking the All or Nothing Approach can be either an act of bravery or just plain recklessness. Unless you are independently wealthy, planning and timing are very important with this approach. That’s because once you leave your previous employment your source of income will be gone and you will have a limited amount of time to make your business work. It is “sink or swim”. And you can sink pretty quickly without a source of income.

So that means you should plan the changeover to self-employment very carefully. Every situation will be different. An acquantance of mine was able to step from his quasi-government job into a private consulting business because he spent the last few months of his employment developing leads and contacts within his industry. When he went on his own he had customers waiting in the wings and was able to more than double his income in his very first year.

But most of us are not so lucky. We do not have the quality leads or the specialized skills. Nor do most of us have the opportunity to use our present employment to build a launching pad of potential customers before we take off into the wild blue yonder of self-employment. Most of us are starting from scratch with a few vague ideas, a questionable set of yet-to-be-defined skills, and severly limited income. So our venture into self-employment had better take off within a few months or we’re likely to crash and burn.

That is why the Spare Time Approach is best for most new self-employed entrepreneurs. The Spare Time Approach lets you test your ideas, develop your skills, and build your business slowly. If you are unsure about the products or services you intend to sell, the Spare Time Approach lets you try out different product lines and see how well they fit in with your overall objectives. Often new entrepreneurs find that their first ideas are not realistic, or there is no market for the services they want to provide. Or they find they cannot charge enough to make any money providing the products or services they have chosen.

**Choose your product carefully**

Like all new entrepreneurs, whether you take the “all or nothing approach” or the “spare time approach” you should be very tight-fisted with your limited resources. That means do not invest any serious money in a product or business idea until you have checked it out thoroughly. The best way to “check it out” is to:

- Talk to people who are already selling the product or service.

- Establish the credibility of the person or company providing the product or service.

- Make sure the company provides on-going support for their product(s).

- Make sure there are no hidden or unexpected costs (such as franchise fees) that will eat away your profits.

This applies whether you are looking at an online product such as an MLM or affiliate scheme, or a more traditional product or service aimed only at local customers.

For example, an associate of mine produces Business Card Displays. The idea behind this product is that it provides new entrepreneurs the opportunity to set up an advertising service for local businesses. With this product, the entrepreneur creates a network of displays placed in high traffic retail outlets like grocery stores, hair salons, and bowling alleys. Then local advertisers can place their business cards in one of the compartments in the displays across the network. If someone browsing one of the displays sees a service they are interested in, they just take a card for future reference.

Sure, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. But for someone willing to put in a few months of hard work at the beginning, it is a pretty easy way to create a business that will return a handsome income for years to come.

And this manufacturer stands behind his product. He can show you examples of successful advertising networks where his displays are used. He will also provide testimonials and contact information from real people whom you can ask how well the product is working for them. And to top it off, he uses the product himself in a network of over 40 displays, and can provide hands-on information about how it actually works in a real-life situations.

This is pretty rare in the world of “business opportunities”. Many are run by “take the money and run” types who make wildly exaggerated claims about how successful you can be. But in many cases they have never actually made the idea work for themselves.

As any successful entrepreneur will tell you, your choice of products is crucial to your success or failure. Many products are simply bogus ideas with no hope of working. And many others are designed to produce maximum profits for their creators, and minimum profits for people like you and me who sell them. So no matter how hard you work, or how committed you are to being successful, if you choose the wrong product you will be operating with a millstone around your neck.

Tips For Freelance Writing Success

Posted by on July 14, 2010 in Writing & Speaking with No Comments

A would-be freelance writer called me the other day asking my advice about how he could become successful in his desired new career. Like a lot of freelance writers, he already had a career and he wanted to shift full-time into the writing life. I don’t get a lot of calls like this; maybe one every five years.

You have to be bold to make that kind of phone call. After all, you’re infringing on somebody else who might rightly perceive you as a competitor. I don’t necessarily recommend that other folks who might be considering freelance writing call me up or contact other writers they know.

But I can give you some free advice from years of being in the trenches.

By far the best thing a freelance writer can do to both set himself apart from the pack and to guarantee a steady flow of new and returning business is to treat freelance writing as a business. That means keeping regular business hours, having a dedicated business phone line (and dedicated fax, too), and approaching your business contacts in a professional way.

Many freelancers become attracted to a career in writing because they think it will give them “flexibility.” Most people who desire flexibility in their work are really saying they don’t want to work regular hours. There are lots of freelance writers who don’t work regular hours. Some only work mornings, others only a couple hours in the afternoon and then again late at night. Some of them make a religion of taking off every Wednesday or Thursday or only working halfdays on even-numbered Fridays. Some freelancers work Sundays but not during the week. And most freelancers I know simply keep erratic hours; they couldn’t tell you on Tuesday when they plan on working Wednesday, if at all.

That’s not an exaggeration. That’s good news for serious writers because one of the best and quickest ways to put yourself into the top 10% of the pack is to keep regular office hours. The hours should match the hours your clients work, which is going to normally be Monday through Friday, 8 to 5 p.m.

If, like me, you have clients on both coasts, you end up coming in earlier than that and staying later. Hey, freelancing is not for wimps.

Next, you need to develop very professional, serious work habits. I maintain an outside office and while I’m at the office, I’m at work. I admit that not every freelance writer can afford his own office and some may claim they don’t want such an extravagance, but this should be the goal. It says that you treat your writing career as a business. An outside office minimizes distractions, will keep you on schedule better (it’s very easy to get off track working at home), and looks more professional.

Think about it from your client’s point of view. If you were a business seeking a writer to promote a million-dollar new product, would you want to hire a writer whose toddler answers the phone and whose every conversation involves a baby screaming in the background?

That being said, there are many times not to launch a freelance writing venture. You need a lot of time, stability, and energy to kick off any new business. This usually does not coincide with the arrival of a new baby. Yet I know more than one freelancer who tried to initiate a freelance career simply because they became a new parent.

As a freelance writer, you have to stop thinking like a creative writer and start thinking as a business person. Your best writing gigs are not going to be articles for the local paper or a movie review for an entertainment website, even though these might seem like the most fun assignments.

Most professional freelance writers do most of their writing for businesses. That means you need to identify and target businesses and approach them…again and again. It’s very rare to cold call a business and land a writing assignment, but cold calling can help you build a list of contacts that you can cultivate into some assignments over time.

If you want to jump-start your freelance enterprise and earn some real money, you absolutely must have people who can link you to assignments. If you have worked at a corporation, make sure you know people the who might hire you (or recommend you). For me, the conventional networking approach of attending parties and social functions as a pretext to swap business cards has never worked; the only people I ever met at these networing wingdings were my competitors. But I do well because I know a lot of people and stay in touch (holiday cards, quarterly e-mails, and occasional phone calls). Eventually, some of them need a freelance writer.

Don’t target the wrong contacts. Your best friends or neighbors or cousins who live in Pittsburgh might all be great people, but if they don’t typically buy copywriting, these are not your contacts. Look for people in industry who might need articles written, books ghostwritten, speeches prepared, or brochures and ads developed.

Many of these contacts will want to see samples of your work. The ideal sample is something very close to what the client wants to buy from you. For instance, if a hospital is interested in hiring you to write a brochure for incoming breast cancer patients, they don’t want to see your article about selling Barbie dolls on E-bay.

So what do you do if you’re angling for a client and don’t have matching clips to dazzle them? Cook some up! Using the same example, you might write an article on breast cancer from the patient’s angle and submit it to some free article or Ezine sites (like this one). That’s publication! You now have a relevant clip. Other places to publish your articles include websites you know (or own), newsletters or local newspapers. These places will not likely pay you for your trouble, but the clip is worth its weight in gold if it gets you a new client.

As a general rule, fish for assignments in areas you know and where you already have good clips. But sometimes an unusual offer comes in and it pays to know how to scramble and come up with some clips. One more hint: clips must be great. Don’t slap something together. A bad clip is worse than no clip.

There are actually lots of freelance opportunities for writers. In fact, many businesses that buy writing complain about the lack of stellar freelance talent. In my own experience (I once bought freelance writing), freelancers never got it all right. Some were good writers but terrible business people (unprofessional, erratic). Some were good at the business end, but could not write well or slopped through their assignments too quickly. A few became overly friendly, calling me on weekends or during the work day to chat, that is, mainly to gripe about how busy they were.

By maintaining a business with business hours and business manners and avoiding falling into the trap of thinking of writing as being your ticket to the world of the “flexible” (i.e. erratic) lifestyle, a writer with good skills can succeed as a full-time freelancer.

HOME BASED ANSWERING SERVICE Business Part 1

Posted by jamie on July 13, 2010 in Sustainable Business with No Comments

HOME BASED ANSWERING SERVICE Business Part 1
Business needs for an answering service can vary considerably. A company may need a phone to be answered
all day, part of the day, after hours only, or 24 hours a day. You can enter this profession at any level you
choose. The amount of equipment youll need to get going will also fluctuate depending on how much time
you want to devote to your homebased answering business.
Most often, businesses need their phones covered during an “extended” work day, say 8:00 A.M. 8:00 P.M.,
with an answering machine taking over the other, less likely, 12 hour call period. Twelve hours can be a long
day if youre going it alone, so you may wish to solicit businesses that generally are looking for the phones to
be answered from 9 AM to 5 or 6 PM. This makes it more likely for you to do the job yourself and work it
easily into your familys schedule, too.
Once you identify your work hours, you can begin the task of soliciting businesses to contract with you.
Before embarking on this important effort, you should establish a goal of how many companies you want to
represent. You can certainly take on more than one company if all youre doing is answering the phone.
How many businesses you take on will dictate how you set up your service. The easiest and most inexpensive
way to begin is to have a separate phone line and phone for each business you contract with. You would then
mark each individual phone with the company name as an identifier for you when the phones begin to ring.
This is the best route if youre going to work with ten or fewer businesses. If you intend to take on more than
ten firms, then it would be more cost and space effective to lease a switchboard from your local telephone
company. A switchboard can accommodate a substantial amount of business activity for you.
Installing separate phone lines should run less than $100 each (possibly higher in some parts of the country).
You will also pay basic monthly charges for each phone. This should average about $2025 per month (again,
possibly higher in some parts of the country). If you are buying actual telephones, these can be acquired
inexpensively at local stores.
Before buying all these phones and contracting with businesses, check with the phone company to see how
many extra lines you can obtain. There may be a limit in your residential neighborhood. How many clients
you can take on will depend on the number of lines you can install You might consider opening up an office
in a nearby commercial area, where the number of lines you need can be accommodated. However, this is
beyond the scope of your homebased answering service.
The amount and type of equipment you obtain will be dictated by your ambition and your budget. It can be as
simple as individual phone lines or as complex as computer screens that flash messages or record instructions
for you to convey.
